The Lead of Research and Development will assist the Chief Engineer with the smooth running of the Chief Engineering department R&D section to design, test and manufacture orbital class rockets, satellites, defence products. Document and communicate across teams to ensure duties are performed in an efficient and timely manner whilst adhering to Gilmour Space policies and procedures.

How you will contribute to our mission in getting Australia to space:

- Work with the Chief Engineer, Department heads, and the program manager in the planning, management, execution, and implementation of engineering projects.
- Work closely with other heads of department and senior engineers in the management and development of strategic planning.
- Provide leadership, oversight, and direct support across all facets of engineering ensuring a profound understanding of new and relevant technologies for the purposes of the different product lines of the company.
- Assist in formulating theoretical designs of aerospace /aeronautical products/systems that can meet the requirements of the business.
- Assist in directing and coordinating activities of engineering, designing, modifying, fabricating, and testing of various products and sub systems.
- Assist in strategic planning and establishing external strategic relationships with potential partners, customers, and collaborators within the Aerospace and related industries.
- Planning and conducting operational, experimental, and environmental tests on prototypes and models of aerospace and aircraft equipment and systems.
- Assist in writing technical reports & other documentations like operating procedures, guides and handbooks that can be used by management, engineering staff and external bodies as required.
- Lead and support the development and work allocation of the junior team
- Lead in the Directing of Research & Development programs.
- Reviewing performance reports & documentation from field engineers, troubleshooting damaged products, or malfunctioning to detect the problem.
- Remain up to date with cutting-edge technologies and industry best practices, absorbing relevant and suitable technology based on projected benefits
- Ensure projects are delivered on time in full and any variations are communicated clearly to the Chief Engineer, Program Manager and broader leadership team.
- Continue to analyse, monitor and improve efficiency and stability of systems.
- Other duties as required by Management.
Mandatory Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline
- NV1 Security Clearance eligible preferred
- 7+ years of experience in a professional engineering setting (excluding internships)
- Highly developed Project Management and Systems Engineering skills
- Advanced knowledge of engineering analysis tools and CAD systems

- Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering (Propulsion, Space Vehicles or Aeronautics)
- Demonstrated project/task management, execution, analysis, and product development capabilities
- Experience building and leading engineering teams with excellent troubleshooting capabilities
- Strong Leadership skills with a minimum of 5+ years in a similar role within the Aerospace or related industries
- Experience in space systems engineering, risk assessment, cost modeling and analysis
- Good understanding and working knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental legislation/requirements
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications

- Demonstrated leadership skills, having ability to move cross functional groups in a unified direction
